Counteroffensive
Steve Tasane
‘A total emotional knockout’
William Young
‘Blistering spoken word from one of the fiercest founders of the scene’.
Joelle Taylor
Counteroffensive: Steve Tasane is a performance poet, so usually “publishes” his poems by opening his mouth, whilst also engaging creatively through and other means. Of refugee heritage, and brought up on a council estate by a single mum, Steve has dedicated his creative life to developing social justice and to empowering the voiceless. He has worked tirelessly with young refugees, excluded pupils, families healing from traumatic life events, and children living with mental health issues and disabilities, working with organisations ranging from Discover Story Centre to Survivors’ Poetry.
He co-founded Atomic Lip, poetry’s first pop group, alongside The Speech Painter, Patience Agbabi and Joelle Taylor. Patience describes Counteroffensive as ‘contemporary rants marching shoulder to shoulder with top notch timeless anthems’. In his time, he’s won a slam or three, earned a standing ovation at Latitude Festival and played the Jazz World stage at Glastonbury. He’s toured his one-man shows on many occasions, appearing at Ledbury, Cheltenham and Hay festivals among others. So it is only natural that Counteroffensive, his first collection in 28 years, is to be published by London Poetry Books, the pioneering poetry publisher specialising in putting performance poetry into print. As Joelle Taylor goes on to say, ‘Counteroffensive is a must read’.
